What is Peer Support Specialist?

How to Become a cPSS

Eligibility Requirements

  1. 18 years or older
  2. Have a lived experience with Mental Health and/or Substance Use Disorders
  3. Have been in recovery for at least one year
  4. Have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Register for Certification Training

PSS applicants are required to complete 40 hrs of certification training.  Train with SHYAS 

Additional Training

North Carolina requires PSS applicants to complete 20 hours of specialized training.  Train with SHYAS


Complete State PSS Application

Application Requirements


  1. Complete Checklist (located on application)
  2. Completed Application Form
  3. Two (2) completed Personal Reference Forms
  4. Copy of the certificate indicating the completion of a Division Approved Peer Support Specialist training
  5. Certificates (copies) and Training Log indicating the completion of 20 additional hours of appropriate training to increase understanding of job and working as a NC CPSS
  6. Pay $20.00 app fee with check or money order made out to "PSS-BHS"
