DWI Services
Substance Use Assessment
Each person with a DWI will be required to receive a substance use assessment. The substance use assessment will determine the hours of treatment and education one must receive. Substance use assessments for DWI or only good for 6 months. Upon receipt of assessment you have 6 months to start your treatment and/or education.
ADETS
ADETS is Alcohol & Drug Education Training School.
PRIME for Life is the educational program used in all the ADETS in North Carolina. ADETS is an educational program for someone with a DWI conviction who does not have an identified substance use disorder but may be at risk for these disorders. The program’s goal is the prevention of any type of alcohol or drug problem and the health problems these lead to.
SHORT TERM TREATMENT
Short Term Treatment in DWI services ranges from 20 -39 hours of substance use group treatment and education classes over a period of 30 days. Short-term treatment is recommended when one has mild to moderate substance use disorder, a BAC of .15 or higher at the time of arrest, and/or refused chemical test at the time of the arrest.
LONGER TERM TREATMENT
Longer-Term Treatment in DWI services ranges from 40-89 hours of substance use group treatment and education classes over a period of 60 days. Longer-term treatment is recommended when one has moderate to severe substance use disorder, more than one DWI, a BAC of .15 or higher at the time of arrest, and/or refused chemical test at the time of the arrest.
DAY TREATMENT or INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT TREATMENT
Day/Intensive Outpatient Treatment in DWI services is a 90-hour substance use group treatment program administered over a period of 90 days. This program is recommended when there is evidence of addiction, outpatient treatment has not been successful, there is withdrawal risk, there is a need for medical monitoring, emotional and behavioral problems require a structured setting, and/or there is high resistance to treatment and an inability to abstain.
